Markets In Focus: The Week That Was and What’s On Tap

THE WEEK THAT WAS

The S&P 500 fell 1.9%, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 4.5%, and the Russell 2000 declined 3.0% for the week ending October 16. Technology led the losses as investors questioned the sustainability of debt-financed AI infrastructure spending.

Despite hotter-than-expected September CPI (3.7% year-over-year versus 3.6% expected) and a firm PPI print, the 10- year Treasury yield fell roughly 15 basis points to around 5.10%. The move reflected a flight to quality as AI financing concerns intensified and equity volatility rose. Investors treated Treasuries as a safe haven even as energy-driven inflation remained sticky. Real yields stayed positive, and the bond market effectively cushioned the equity sell-off.

September CPI showed a 0.6% monthly gain driven largely by gasoline, with core CPI up 0.3% for the month and 2.6% annually. Bank earnings were mixed. Goldman Sachs posted a strong trading beat while JPMorgan missed, but they were overshadowed by growing unease over AI financing. CoreWeave’s bonds fell into distressed territory with yields near 15%, raising broader questions about the heavy borrowing behind the data-center buildout. Semiconductor stocks sold off sharply as a result.

Geopolitics added pressure. Houthi strikes on Saudi infrastructure and ongoing risks around the Strait of Hormuz kept oil prices elevated near $100–105, while a short-lived Russia-Ukraine energy arrangement showed signs of fraying. The combination of sticky inflation, AI debt concerns, and lower bond yields drove a clear rotation: defensive sectors and energy outperformed while growth lagged. The VIX climbed toward 20 as the market entered extreme fear territory, according to the CNN Fear and Greed Index.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Markets enter a pivotal week with Q3 earnings accelerating and a light but relevant macro calendar, following last week’s AI/semiconductor-driven selloff that left the S&P 500 down ~2% and the Nasdaq off ~4.5%. Futures point higher early Monday as the AI trade stabilizes and oil eases modestly from recent highs near $110.

Macro data is secondary to earnings. Tuesday brings September housing starts and building permits plus pending home sales, key gauges of interest-rate-sensitive activity amid still-elevated mortgage rates. Thursday’s initial jobless claims will be watched for any shift in labor-market resilience. Friday features S&P Global flash PMIs and the final University of Michigan consumer sentiment reading. The Fed remains in blackout ahead of the October 27-28 FOMC meeting; last week’s hotter-than-expected CPI and PPI have not yet meaningfully raised odds of a hike, but sticky inflation keeps the policy path under scrutiny.

Earnings take center stage as Q3 reporting gears up. Tuesday features SpaceX (SPCX) and Netflix after the close, alongside industrials such as GE Aerospace, RTX, and General Motors. Investors will focus on Starlink subscriber growth, AI compute revenue ramp, and capital-expenditure intensity at SpaceX. Wednesday is the week’s other highlight, with Tesla and Meta—the first Magnificent Seven names—reporting after the bell, joined by Lam Research, Texas Instruments, and IBM. Thursday brings Procter & Gamble, Lockheed Martin, Blackstone, Comcast, and others. Guidance on AI spending, margins, and consumer demand will set the tone for broader risk appetite.

Geopolitically, elevated oil prices reflect ongoing Middle East tensions, including Houthi attacks and Strait of Hormuz shipping disruptions, even as a temporary Russia diesel-export arrangement and sanctions waiver have provided partial relief. These dynamics, alongside approaching U.S. midterms, support a higher energy risk premium and remain a potential source of volatility for equities and rates.
